GTHL Weekend Roundup: Nov. 8-9

A relatively quiet Saturday – only 47 games – was followed by a 121-game Sunday in the Greater Toronto Hockey League:

Minor Midget AAA
After a busy weekend in the Minor Midget AAA division, one storyline remains constant: the Toronto Titans are undefeated.

The Titans tied the Don Mills Flyers 1-1 in a battle between the top two teams on Sunday at Victoria Village Arena in North York. At 13-0-2 (28 points) the Titans hold a one-point edge on the Flyers (12-1-3, 27 points), with one game in hand.

Behind the Titans and Flyers are last year’s top teams – the Toronto Marlboros and Toronto Jr. Canadiens – who hold identical 10-3-2 (22 points) records after weekend wins; the Marlboros were 7-0 winners against the Markham Majors while the Jr. Canadiens downed the Vaughan Kings 9-1.

The Mississauga Reps (8-6-4, 20 points) sit alone in fifth place following a 2-1 win over the Toronto Young Nationals.

Only two points behind the Reps are the Mississauga Rebels, who skated to a 5-0 victory over the Toronto Red Wings. At 8-6-2 (18 points), the Rebels have played two fewer games than the Reps.

The Red Wings also earned a 4-1 victory over the Kings while the North York Rangers and Mississauga Senators skated to a 2-2 tie.

Midget A
The Ted Reeve Thunder shut out the Willowdale Blackhawks 5-0 to earn their fifth victory in their past six outings. At 9-2-1 (19 points), the Thunder sits five points back of North Toronto (12-1-0, 24 points) for first place, with one game in hand.

Playing back-to-back contests over the weekend, the Goulding Park Rangers emerged with their first set of consecutive wins this season. The Rangers first earned a 5-4 home-ice win over the North York Knights before defeating the Vaughan Panthers 4-1.

A 5-3 win over the Avalanche on Sunday night allowed the Knights to eclipse the .500-mark into sole possession of fifth in the League standings (7-6-0, 14 points).

The Leaside Flames (6-5-1, 13 points) remain one point behind the Knights following a 3-2 win over the Amesbury Attack (5-3-3, 13 points).

The Toronto City Blues won their only weekend contest, 5-2 over the Panthers.

Minor Midget AA
The North York Knights still hold top spot in the East division following a 4-0 win over the Goulding Park Rangers on Sunday. The Knights (14-1-0, 28 points) have won nine of their past 10 games (9-0-1) since suffering their only loss of the season on Sept. 28 against the Leaside Flames.

The Toronto Shamrocks did their part to keep pace with the Knights, earning a 5-3 win over the Toronto City Blues to remain two points back of first overall (11-2-2, 24 points). The idle East Ender Ticats (11-4-1, 23 points) and Markham Islanders (10-5-1, 21 points) are also within reach of top spot.

In the West, the Humber Valley Sharks kept their hold of first overall with a 4-2 win over the Toronto Wolverines. The Sharks (14-1-0, 28 points) have won 12 straight games since suffering their only defeat of the season on Sept. 26 against the Vaughan Panthers.

The only other divisional game of the weekend saw the saw the Streetsville Tigers win for the second time in their past four outings, 2-1 over the Etobicoke Canucks.

Atom AAA
The battle for top spot in the Atom AAA division continued on the weekend with both the Toronto Jr. Canadiens and Mississauga Rebels earning lopsided road victories.

The Jr. Canadiens kept their perfect record in tact with 5-0 and 6-0 wins at the North York Rangers and Toronto Titans, respectively. They rank first overall with 30 points (15-0-0).

The Rebels are the only team currently within striking distance of the Jr. Canadiens. At 14-1-0 (28 points), the Rebels also posted wins against the Titans (5-1) and Rangers (9-0).

Mississauga’s only defeat was a 4-1 loss to the Jr. Canadiens on Nov. 1; the date of their next meeting has yet to be scheduled.
