TORONTO, ON – The Greater Toronto Hockey League is proud to announce the six celebrity coaches who will take part in the 2022 GTHL Top Prospects Game powered by Under Armour. The game takes place on January 13 at Scotiabank Pond in Downsview Park. 

Returning celebrity coach Darcy Tucker will stand with new attendees Ted Nolan and Anthony Stewart. On the opposing bench, Wendel Clark and Wayne Primeau return to the event with first-time celebrity coach Angela James.  

A limited number of tickets for the 2022 GTHL Top Prospects Game will be available for purchase online only, starting on Monday, January 3 at 5:00pm. Tickets, including a service fee, will be $15 each. Tickets will not be available for purchase at the GTHL office or at the door.  

Due to the limited number of tickets available, those who are unable to attend will be given the opportunity to purchase the live stream through the GTHL’s streaming partner, GameOnStream. The link to register for the live stream will become available on Monday, January 3 at 5:00pm.  

Get to know the celebrity coaches for the 2022 GTHL Top Prospects Game powered by Under Armour:  

TEAM NOLAN-STEWART-TUCKER 

Drafted 78th overall in the 1978 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, Nolan brings forth a significant amount of playing and coaching experience. Following seven professional playing seasons in the American Hockey League and the NHL, the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native made the jump to the bench beginning with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League in 1988. Nolan led the Greyhounds to three consecutive Memorial Cup tournament berths, winning the national championship in 1993. Nolan’s coaching experience extends to the game’s highest level, spending time with the NHL’s Hartford Whalers, Buffalo Sabres, and the New York Islanders. On the international stage, Nolan has led both Latvia and Poland. Nolan is from Garden River First Nations, an Ojibway Band in northern Ontario. 

Tucker, a 15-season NHL veteran, is best known for his time spent with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but also spent time with the Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Colorado Avalanche. The sixth round pick of the Canadiens in the 1993 NHL Draft is one of a select few players to win a record three consecutive Memorial Cup championships while playing with the Western Hockey League’s Kamloops Blazers. At the NHL level, the Castor, Alberta native posted 476 points (215 goals and 261 assists) in 947 games played. Cain Tucker, the son of Darcy, currently plays for the GTHL’s U18 ‘AAA’ North York Rangers.

TEAM CLARK-JAMES-PRIMEAU  

Drafted by the Leafs first overall in 1985, Clark brings a total of 15 NHL seasons – with three spent as captain of the blue and white – where he tallied 564 points (330 goals and 234 assists) in 793 games played. Beyond the Leafs, Clark also spent time with the Islanders, Lightning, Red Wings, and Chicago Blackhawks. Known for his tenacious style, Clark also has experience at the international level, capturing gold with Team Canada at the IIHF World Junior Championship in 1985. Clark spent several seasons on a GTHL bench as well, standing as an assistant coach with the Toronto Young Nationals from 2009 to 2014. 

James’ resume is filled with international experience and success, starting with 54 points (33 goals and 21 assists) in 50 games played with Canada’s National Women’s Team. The Toronto, Ontario native captured four gold medals at the IIHF World Women’s Championship (1990, 1992, 1994, and 1997), and added a silver medal with Team Ontario at the 1990 IIHF World Women’s Championship – the same tournament that saw James set a record for goals with 11. James’ medal count also includes two gold medals at the 3 Nations Cups. Beyond Team Canada, James spent 1980 to 1998 playing for the Central Ontario Women’s Hockey League, earning MVP six times and leading the league in scoring eight times. From 1998 to 2000, James played in the National Women’s Hockey League, winning the NWHL championship with the Beatrice Aeros in 2000 and earning MVP honours in 1999. Making history, James was the first Canadian woman inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010 and was recently named an Order of Hockey in Canada Honouree in 2021. For the 2021-22 season, James is an assistant coach with the Toronto Six.  

Primeau, following an 18-season NHL career, has spent a number of years coaching in the GTHL, including currently on the U13 ‘AAA’ Markham Majors bench as an assistant coach. The Scarborough, Ontario native split his NHL career with the Sabres, Lightning, Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, and the Leafs, registering 194 points (69 goals and 125 assists) in 774 games. Mason Primeau, Wayne’s son, is a GTHL alumnus having played for the Toronto Young Nationals. Mason also played in the GTHL’s Top Prospects Game in 2017.
