U10 AA West Mall Lightning show spirit of giving with Charity Run and record-breaking food drive

The Under-10 ‘AA’ West Mall Lightning demonstrated the meaning of teamwork and community spirit through participating in a five kilometre charity run. The run took place in Centennial Park on November 23. Players, coaches, and their families came together to combine fitness with philanthropy to make a significant impact on those in need.

As part of the initiative, the Lightning raised funds and collected non-perishable food items for Food Banks Canada. The team surpassed both their collection and fundraising goals.

Through the team’s charitable work, a total of 100 non-perishable food items were donated to the St. James Food Basket in Etobicoke and 59 monetary donations totaled $3,683.25 in support of Food Banks Canada. This amount more than tripled their original fundraising goal of $1,200, setting a new record and surpassing last year’s efforts.

“Giving back to the community is an important part of the growth of the players on the U10 team,” said Jeannine Spurrell-Eastman, a representative of the West Mall Lightning Minor Hockey Association. “We are extremely happy to see the team and families go above and beyond again this year!”

For the players, the charity run was a demonstration that success is not only measured in wins and losses, but also in the possibility of having a positive impact on their local community.
