The puck dropped on the Ontario Hockey League’s Opening Week on Thursday, September 26 with the reigning Memorial Cup champions Saginaw Spirit hosting the Windsor Spitfires, and a rivalry match-up between the Kingston Frontenacs and the Peterborough Petes. As the 2024-25 season begins, a total of 167 Greater Toronto Hockey League alumni are featured on OHL Opening Week rosters.

The Brampton Steelheads lead the way with 15 former GTHL players rostered, including newly named captain Porter Martone (Toronto Jr. Canadiens). In a close second are the Erie Otters and the Niagara IceDogs are in a close second with 13 each. Rosters with 10 or more GTHL alumni include the Oshawa Generals (11), Kitchener Rangers (10), and Sudbury Wolves (10). Of the 20 OHL teams, 19 have at least five GTHL alumni on their Opening Week roster.

The alumni also represent all 12 of the GTHL’s ‘AAA’ clubs. The Toronto Jr. Canadiens top the list with 33 representatives, with the Toronto Marlboros a close second with 28. The Mississauga Senators and the North York Rangers follow with 19 and 17 former players respectively, while the Vaughan Kings are next up with 14. Every GTHL ‘AAA’ club features at least six GTHL alumni.

In the first night of regular season action, Liam Greentree and the Spitfires spoiled the Spirit’s celebration with a 5-4 overtime win, while Mason Vaccari and the Frontenacs skated to a comfortable 7-2 victory over the Petes.
