Team GTHL Blue had a three-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 6-1 win over Team ALLIANCE in the final at the 2016 OHL Gold Cup in Kitchener on Sunday.
GTHL Blue goaltender Hunter Jones (Mississauga Reps) made 29 saves in the victory to finish the tournament with a 3-0-0 record, 2.33 goals-against average and .929 save percentage in three contests.
Special teams proved to be the difference in the final, as GTHL Blue tallied four power-play goals and went perfect on the penalty kill, withstanding all eight man advantage opportunities for Team ALLIANCE .
Toronto Marlboros teammates Akil Thomas (2-1–3) – who paced all players with 11 points in the tournament – and Danil Antropov (1-0–1) each scored in the first period to spot GTHL Blue to an early 2-0 lead. Thomas and Antropov were named to the All-Star Team at the 2016 OHL Cup after finishing first and second in tournament scoring, respectively.
Curtis Douglas (Mississauga Senators), Teth Burles (Mississauga Rebels), and Jackson Alexeev (Toronto Jr. Canadiens) also scored for the GTHL, who won the tournament for a second straight year.
