2016 OHL Priority Selection
Less than three weeks after the final game of the OHL Cup, 81 GTHL players were selected in the OHL Priority Selection, including top pick Ryan Merkley.
Merkley, a defenceman from the Toronto Jr. Canadiens, became the third straight GTHL graduate to go first overall, following Jakob Chychrun (2014) and David Levin (2015). The Jr. Canadiens captain, who was named GTHL Minor Midget Player of the Year, also headlines the list of 40 GTHL players participating in the 2016 OHL Gold Cup in early May.
Another defenceman, Owen Lalonde of the Windsor AAA Zone went second overall to the Sudbury Wolves. Forwards Connor Roberts (No.3, Hamilton Bulldogs), Blade Jenkins (No. 4, Saginaw Spirit) and Ty Dellandrea (No. 5, Flint Firebirds) rounded out the top five selections. A total of 81 GTHL players were selected in the draft, including 12 in the first round.
