Drill of the Month: November 2023

DRILL OF THE MONTH: Forwards – Entries – Overspeed Moves

Age Group:

  • Under-15

Skill Description – First Progression

  • Forwards start in a line on blueline.
  • Can split forwards into two lines on opposite ends of the blueline.
  • First forward in line skates across the blueline and circles around the offside faceoff dot.
  • While circling, the forward is building speed for a zone entry.
  • Forward enters zone wide and with speed, coming in 1-on-0 for a shot on goal.

Skill Description – Second Progression

  • Add a coach, who shadows the forward (acting as a player backchecking) as they circle the offside faceoff dot.
  • This forces the forward to protect the puck and also circle at game speed.
  • The coach can also change up which way they shadow the forward, forcing them to read and react (take a different route to enter the zone).
  • Coach lets the player go as they enter the zone and head to the net.

Skill Description – Third Progression

  • Add a second forward to the drill.
  • Both forwards circle the offside faceoff dot and enter the zone with speed against a coach or defenseman.
  • Play becomes a 2-on-1.
  • Forward without the puck (F2) drives the net.
  • Forward with the puck (F1) shoots for a rebound.

Key Teaching Points

  • Using crossovers to generate speed and enter zone.
  • Shoulder checking to determine where the pressure is coming from.
  • Driving wide when entering the zone and not through the middle of the ice.
