Not everything in hockey comes easy, and that includes ripping the tape off your socks after a hard-fought game. The difficulty that can come with that exact task is what motivated brothers David and Adam Nascimben from the Vaughan Rangers to come up with a solution to the problem.

“My brother and I came up with H2 Hockey Straps one day after a game,” explained 8-year-old Adam. “I knew there had to be a better way. My brother and I tested different types of velcro until we found the perfect one. After we found the right type for sports with the help of our parents, the H2 Hockey Straps were created. My brother and I have been using them for more than two years.”

The straps, which act as a reusable alternative to hockey tape, were put to the ultimate test when the brothers appeared on Dragons’ Den – a nationally televised program which sees contestants pitch their business ideas to a panel of successful entrepreneurs.

“The Dragons were amazing to us and we were super excited to be there,” said 12-year-old David. “We were happy to think that maybe if the Dragons liked our product they would help us make a difference in the lives of other players who would rather not use hockey tape.”

Adam and David pitched their product at $20,000 for a 20% share in the business. The boys left the Den with a deal from two Dragons who invested $20,000 for a 25% share.

“Since the show, we have received many orders from across Canada,” explained Adam. “Our website receives thousands of hits weekly and the response on social media outlets has been incredible.”

For David, running his own business is not much different than being on the ice. He says hockey has prepared him to face the obstacles of being an entrepreneur.

“Just like hockey, business has its’ ups and downs. Through hockey we have learned to problem solve together and to remain focused on our goals, it’s just like a play- anything can happen, we need to be prepared, think fast and trust each other.
