The Greater Toronto Hockey League and its community are mourning the loss of Brian Coles. Brian passed surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer on February 12, 2025.
As shared in Brian’s obituary, he will be forever remembered as a man of true strength, integrity, and love, a dedicated firefighter and hockey referee, a loving husband, a devoted father and grandfather, and a loyal friend to all who knew him.
Brian began officiating in the Toronto Hockey League (THL) in the late 1960s and dedicated more than five decades to the game. In addition to serving as an on-ice official for the THL, Metro Toronto Hockey League (MTHL), Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), and Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) for over 40 years, Brian held the position of MTHL/GTHL Referee-In-Chief from approximately 1990 until his passing — a remarkable 54 years of service to hockey. Brian was the recipient of the GTHL’s Gus Gordon Memorial Officials Award in 2013 and in 2006, the recipient of the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) Officiating Award.
“Brian’s impact extended far beyond the ice,” Scott Oakman, GTHL Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, shared. “Through his leadership in both firefighting and officiating, Brian mentored and guided countless young people, shaping the lives of thousands over the years. His contributions to the community are immeasurable.”
Brian’s loss comes eight months after the tragic passing of his son, Sean Coles, who was also a referee and firefighter.
For the past number of years, Brian has proudly watched Sean’s son Liam become an official in both the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) and the OHA.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation in Brian’s memory to Oak Ridges Hospice in Port Perry, Ontario.
The GTHL is deeply saddened by this loss and is sending heartfelt condolences to Brian’s wife, Betty Jane, his daughter, Amanda, and to his family and friends during this difficult time.
