The Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) today announced the teams that have been granted entry for the 2016-17 season. The GTHL Board of Directors has approved the participation of 566 entries from 51 different Hockey Clubs and Associations.
A total of 96 AAA teams, eight Under-21 AAA teams, 240 AA teams, and 222 A teams were awarded for the 2016-17 season, compared to 96 AAA teams, six Under-21 AAA teams, 243 AA teams, and 221 A teams that were awarded at this time last year.
“The GTHL is pleased to announce the team entries that will be participating next season,” said GTHL president Don West. “Of the 580 requests for teams, the Board felt these 566 were the strongest applications. We look forward to next season and wish each of these teams the best of luck.”
The GTHL will continue offering both a Midget Jr. division for 16-year-olds and a Midget division for 16 and 17-year-old players at both the A and AA levels. The GTHL will continue with its initiatives aimed at making the Midget division more attractive by avoiding games during exams and March Break, and holding all-star games for each category.
Tryouts will commence on April 11, 2016. The 2016-17 hockey season will begin for the AAA division on September 12, 2016, followed by the AA and A divisions on September 19, 2016.
The GTHL is the largest amateur hockey league in the world, with over 40,000 participants registered annually.
