Around the G: Jan. 19-21

One of the last weekend’s of the regular season was highlighted by the over 70 games taking place at Scotiabank Pond as part of the inaugural I Play The G Festival. Players were treated to activates and samples both prior to and after their games, including a box of healthy snacks courtesy of Hockey Snacks, and a free chocolate milk from the Dairy Farmers of Ontario. Which teams benefited from the added energy to the rink? Find out in the latest edition of around the G.

Minor Atom A

A 2-0 victory against Forest Hill (6-24-1) put York Mills (21-2-8) one point ahead of North Toronto (22-4-5) and the North York Knights (21-3-7) for the top spot in the East. With only five games left in the regular season, the regular season champs may end up being determined in the last hour. Both North Toronto and York Mills will play the Knights in next few weeks. Who will come out on top?

The Duffield Devils (26-1-1) used the momentum of the I Play In the G atmosphere to propel themselves to a 3-2 victory over the Avalanche (14-11-3) on Saturday. After a win over the Avalanche on Sunday, the Greater Toronto Capitals (25-1-2) sit only one-point back of the Devils with eight games left to play. The first place Devils and second place Capitals will face each other on February 5.

West – West Mall Lightning 4, Toronto Eagles 1
West – Toronto Wolverines 1, Humber Valley Sharks 5

Minor Peewee AA

After a first-round playoff exit last season, the Toronto Shamrocks (25-2-2) won their fourth straight on Sunday to grab an eleven-point lead over the second place North York Knights (18-7-5). With only seven games left, the Shamrocks will only have to win one more game in order to secure the title as regular season champions.

In the West, the Streetsville Tigers (20-5-5) are pushing to retain their title as regular season champions. The Tigers, however, will have to fend off the Vaughan Panthers (19-4-6) if they want to remain the kings of the regular season castle. After a 4-2 win over the Vaughan Rangers (13-7-9) on Sunday, the Panthers now sit only one-point back of the Tigers with a game in hand. With the division being tiered half-way through the season, the Minor Peewee AA West division will see the following playoff format:

The top 4 teams in Tier 1 qualify for the playoffs.

A play-in round of one game playoffs will determine the remaining 4 playoff spots under this format.

Tier 1-5th place vs. Tier 2-4th place.

Tier 1-6th place vs. Tier 2-3rd place.

Tier 1-7th place vs. Tier 2-2nd place.

Tier 1-8th place vs. Tier 2-1st place.

Peewee AAA

There is no doubt there will be a new Peewee AAA regular season champion. The only question remains now is what team it will be. A 3-2 win over the Toronto Red Wings (4-20-6) on Friday put the Toronto Marlboros (21-6-3) within four points of the first place Mississauga Reps (22-3-5). With three games left to play, who will take the title of regular season champions?

Other finals from Peewee AAA weekend action:

North York Rangers 1, Don Mills Flyers 3
Markham Majors 2, Mississauga Rebels 4
