Kingston, ON – Colton Cribari scored the winning goal with 2:13 left in the third period to lift the  Markham Majors to a 2-1 win over the Mississauga Senators in the championship game of the 2024 U14 OHL Cup on Sunday.

After two scoreless periods, the Majors opened the scoring on a power play goal by Ryder Nobes with 9:14 left in the third period. Forward Ronan Quinn assisted on both Markham goals.

The Majors won the championship despite missing several players to injury.

“We were battling through, as I’m sure every team does in a six-game tournament,” said Markham coach Kevin Cribari. “So (we had to) just overcome a little bit of the adversity.”

Cribari said that he has seen his team battle through adversity for years and that helped them win this championship.

“I’ve been able to coach a lot of them for eight, nine years,” Cribari said. “Had them since since tyke. And we just find ways to win. They’re just such a great group of teammates.”

Earlier Sunday, Markham defeated the Barrie Jr. Colts 8-1 in the first semi-final. Mississauga outlasted the Quinte Red Devils 3-2 in overtime to set up the championship game.

The Majors entered the tournament as GTHL champions, completing an unforgettable season with a win in their final game.

OHL Commissioner David Branch was on-hand alongside the League’s Director of Recruitment and Player Services Brodie Barrick to present the championship trophy on Sunday.
