GTHL Awards season is here. To celebrate, we will be profiling each of the award winners individually leading up to the ceremony on June 15
Eighteen years after hitting the ice for the first time, Hughston Rozario loves the game of hockey more than ever. Playing in the Mississauga Hockey League for most of his hockey career, Hughston found unexpected success with the Toronto Colts U-21 “AAA” team when he signed on three seasons ago.
“At his very first tryouts in 2015-16 he was a long shot to make our team,” explained Colts Head Coach Bruce Sturley. “It was his hustle and attitude that made it impossible to turn him away.”
In three short seasons with the Colts, Hughston’s work ethic allowed him to go from underdog to team captain.
“He started with the Colts as a project player and became an impact player and a team captain, ” said Sturley. “By the time we reached the playoffs and OHF’s during his second season, Hughie had become a go-to player and a huge part of our success.”
Hughston’s time with the Colts saw the team succeed beyond his wildest expectations.
“Most memorable moment would be, being able to participate in the OHF Championships all three years I played with the Colts,” said Hughston. “We won more championships than I ever imagined winning when I signed with the Colts.”
Off the ice, Hughston has graduated from George Brown College with his diploma in Culinary Management. He is currently attending Sheridan College, studying in their Educational Support Program.
“I want to pursue a career in culinary management while helping youth in an educational setting,” said Hughston on his plans for the future. “I will continue to pursue playing hockey as well.”
Hughston will be presented with the Ray Heslop Under-21 Dedication Award at the GTHL Awards Ceremony on June 15. The Award recognizes an Under 21 player or team official who best exemplifies the true spirit of Under 21 hockey; this includes the ideal of keeping hockey players involved in the game while continuing to strive for excellence and opportunity.
