GTHL, Carnegie family announce Herbert H. Carnegie Award

The Greater Toronto Hockey League, in collaboration with the Carnegie family, is proud to announce the Herbert H. Carnegie Award. The award will recognize a forward-thinking GTHL organization that has demonstrated leadership in creating and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, in addition to commitment to community development and outreach.

The award will also recognize those as an exemplar of the Future Aces Creed, the Herbert H. Carnegie Future Aces Foundation message of citizenship:

  • A: Attitude, Ability, Action, Achieve
  • C: Cooperation, Courage, Confidence
  • E: Example, Empathy, Education
  • S: Service, Sportsmanship

“The GTHL is proud and honoured to be able to recognize GTHL organizations that are aligned with the values and beliefs of Mr. Carnegie,” said Scott Oakman, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the GTHL. “His legacy is one that deserves honouring and his values are ones we should all be striving to live by. As we collectively work to instill these values in the young people we work with, this award will recognize the organizations that are doing so.”

Any GTHL organization is eligible to apply and/or to be nominated for the Herbert H. Carnegie Award. Application forms will be made available when the GTHL opens its Awards and Scholarships for the respective season.

To complete the nomination process, along with the application form, the GTHL Member will be required to share a letter to the GTHL Awards Committee and the Carnegie family outlining the demonstrated leadership in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion, along with community development and outreach, in an effort to better service their community. The GTHL Member will also require a statement or letter of support from two sources who have been positively impacted by the initiatives undertaken by the nominated organization.

The GTHL Awards Committee will work with the Carnegie family to make a nominated recommendation to the GTHL Board of Directors to finalize the recipient of the award.

“The Carnegie family is extremely honoured and privileged to have the GTHL recognize the patriarch of our family, Herb Carnegie, with the creation of the Herbert H. Carnegie Award,” the Carnegie family shared. “Herb was a visionary who, through the power of his good citizenship creed, helped empower the communities in which he served. We thank the GTHL for this opportunity to have our family legacy continue through this award.”
