GTHL alum Kevin Weekes featured in “NHL Life” series

By Brendon Crossman

GTHL alumnus and former National Hockey League goaltender Kevin Weekes has used his influence in the hockey world to help grow the game and give back to the community in which he began his playing career. Weekes, a Scarborough native who played for the Toronto Red Wings in the former Metropolitan Toronto Hockey League (now GTHL), is featured in the NHL’s newest episode of the “NHL Life” series.

The fourth installment of the nine-part series takes a behind-the-scenes look at Weekes’ day-to-day life as the first black broadcaster in NHL history. Weekes, who played 11 NHL campaigns with seven teams before breaking onto the television scene, discussed his minor hockey experiences in the Greater Toronto Area.

“I was very fortunate, growing up, playing in Toronto. Our teams were always very multi-cultural.”

He also shared stories about his parents’ efforts to keep him in the game and discussed why he gives back to grassroots hockey programs.

“Part of the main reason that I like to always re-visit where we’ve come from, and especially in Scarborough, is just to never lose perspective.”

Weekes also discussed his philanthropic efforts including a speaking engagement in Washington during the Chicago Blackhawks’ visit with the Stanley Cup.

“We want as many kids playing, we want as many adults playing. No matter where you’re from, no matter what your last name is, no matter how you worship. We went them to enjoy our game.”

Former GTHL star P.K. Subban was featured in the first episode of the series.
