2015-16 Frank D. Smith Midget A Scholarship Award

Matthew Kotansky has played with the Vaughan Rangers for seven years, recently completing his Midget A campaign with the club. He says his most memorable hockey moments came during the 2014-15 season when his Midget Jr. team captured the Kraft Cup, GTHL Playoffs and GTHL ‘A’ championships.

Kotansky, who has been an Honour Roll student since Grade 9, will attend Wilfrid Laurier University in the fall to embark on his path toward medical school. During his studies he plans to continue volunteering at the Reena Foundation, an organization for developmentally disabled kids and adults where he already has compiled more than 150 hours of community service.

“Hockey helped keep me going,” wrote Kotansky in his scholarship application, adding that the sport has been his passion and outlet since he was little.

“I can honestly say that I give 100% at every game and practice. I wasn’t the fastest skater, but I worked continuously to get better.”
