Game Over: 2016 PlayStation Platinum Cup Wrap Up

Over 50 on-ice games and countless NHL 17 match-ups later, the PlayStation Platinum Cup sounded the buzzer on the 2016 tournament. Teams gave fans plenty to cheer about, including a whopping $30,000 players helped raise for Camp Ooch.  Due to the donation all teams left as winners, but ultimately only a few could go home with some hardware.

After both losing their first game and ending their round-robin match-up in a tie, the Riverside Rangers (OMHA) and Erindale Spitfires (Mississauga Hockey League) met again in Sunday’s gold medal game. Both squads entered the tournament as two of the top teams in the Atom A division. A strong effort on both ends resulted in a 3-1 Riverside Rangers victory, with Erindale taking home the silver.

The Caledon Hawks (OHMA) only round-robin loss came at the expense division-mates, Burlington Eagles Gold (OMHA). The Hawks came back to defeat Burlington in the semifinals, but couldn’t fend off a strong North Toronto (GTHL) squad, who were able to net three unanswered goals to take the division.

The Mississauga Senators (GTHL) and Markham Waxers (OMHA) were the only two undefeated teams in the round-robin, so it came as no surprise when they were scheduled for the final. Ultimately, the high-scoring Senators had their way, taking home gold after a 3-0 victory.

Silver: Markham Waxers
Bronze: Don Mills Flyers
