After the Bantam Toronto Marlboros and Midget Mississauga Rebels clinched gold at their respective Regional Championships, the hosting Don Mills Flyers are looking for similar luck at the Peewee AAA Regional Championships this week at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
“It’s an exciting time for all these young men and a phenomenal experience,” said Flyers Head Coach Alexander Eaton.
The 2004-born team will be looking to clinch their first Regional Championship at the tournament. If successful, the team would follow in the footsteps of last year’s gold medal winning Peewee Flyers team.
The Flyers, however, know they’re in for a challenge – facing off against a Toronto Jr. Canadiens team that eliminated them in the second round of the Scotiabank GTHL Playoffs.
“They are a tough team but we have beat them before,” said Easton who led the Flyers to a win in the five-game playoff series against the Jr. Canadiens.
In addition to competing on the ice, the hosting Flyers have a few extra-circulars planned throughout the week.
“The events we’re doing like the night at the Hockey Hall of Fame and watching the Leafs practice should be a good time with the boys,” said Flyers forward Aidan Castle after a 4-0 loss to the Jr. Canadiens.
The Flyers were 0-1-1 after day one of the tournament, but Flyers President Peter MacInnis expects to see that record improve.
“The boys were a bit rusty coming out of the gate, but they really picked it up in [Monday’s] 3-3 tie with Hockey Eastern Ontario,” said MacInnis. “I expect them to make the final four, and after that anything can happen.”
They Flyers are scheduled to play the Ajax-Pickering Raiders on Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. Click here for a full tournament schedule.
