U-14 Goaltender Development, U-15 Program of Excellence Camp Details

U14 GOALTENDER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

A new development camp is being offered in the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) to introduce young goaltenders to the skills, concepts and techniques of the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence Goaltending Program.

In partnership with Hockey Canada and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the OHF will host one camp in April for up to 36, 2004-born male goaltenders. These U14 goaltenders will be under the instruction and leadership of goaltending experts working with a curriculum from Hockey Canada’s High Performance Goaltending Advisory Group.

The two-day camp will have four on-ice sessions focusing on skating, positioning and skill stations. There will also be three off-ice sessions covering mental preparation, position specific warm-ups and cool-downs and an introduction to the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence. Lunch will be provided to participants, along with a jersey and t-shirt.

“Goaltending is such a unique position and requires an equally unique approach in preparing the next wave of high performance athletes,” said Tony Foresi, OHF President. “The OHF is pleased to be part of that evolving approach to goaltenders and I am confident that the experience gained during this camp will help our goalies progress toward their goals.”

Dates have also been released for the 11th annual OHF/OHL U-15 Program of Excellence Camp. In total, five camps will take place across Ontario, introducing young players – and their families – to the high performance stream of hockey.

Hockey Canada established the Program of Excellence to identify the top calibre hockey players in specific age categories and to provide these players with an opportunity to participate against international competition. By participating in the Program of Excellence, players are exposed to high calibre coaching and training methods designed to better prepare our national teams to compete against the top teams in the world.

The goals of the program include: to introduce players, families and staff to high performance hockey, the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence and the Ontario Hockey League; to create a unique and special life and hockey experience for all players and staff involved; and to develop players and staff both on and off the ice. Off-ice sessions include seminars with keynote speakers on topics such as sports psychology, nutrition, and fitness.

Players and Coaches will participate in intense, high performance on and off ice sessions and seminars. On-ice sessions will be led by OHL personnel and will include three practices focusing on individual skills, team tactics, and a position-specific practice, On-Ice Testing, and two games. Off-ice sessions will include topics such as Mental Health, Sports Psychology, Nutrition and Fitness. It is expected that all staff members play an active role in both on and off ice sessions and seminars.

The coaching staff in each location (Kitchener, Toronto, Windsor, and Oshawa) will consist of three to four Team Staff members – two to three Coaches and one certified Trainer. The program is open to all male and female team staff who are registered to a team within the OHF for the 2017-18 season. All Coaches must be in good standing and maintain at minimum a Development 1 Certification and completed Respect in Sport. All Trainers must be in good standing and maintain at minimum a HTCP Level 1 Certification and completed Respect in Sport.

If accepted into one of the OHF/OHL Under-15 Camps, there will be no cost to Team Staff and includes all meals and accommodations for the weekend.
