84 GTHL alumni featured on 2024-25 NHL opening night rosters

As the 2024-25 season gets rolling in the National Hockey League (NHL), a total of 84 Greater Toronto Hockey League alumni are featured on opening night rosters.

Of the 32 teams in the NHL, 31 include at least one former GTHL player on their roster to start the season. Nine teams include a minimum of four former GTHL players.

Wyatt Johnston (Toronto Marlboros) and the Dallas Stars lead the way with six GTHL alumni rostered. In a close second are the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Utah Hockey Club, and the Washington Capitals each with five former GTHL players.

Of the 12 GTHL ‘AAA’ clubs, 11 are represented at the NHL-level. The Toronto Marlboros feature 22 alumni, with the Don Mills Flyers second in line with 11. The Toronto Jr. Canadiens have nine former players rostered, while the Toronto Red Wings have seven. The Mississauga Rebels, Mississauga Senators, and the Reps Hockey Club each have six former players roster as the 2024-25 NHL season gets underway. The Toronto Young Nationals (5) and the Vaughan Kings (4) are in the middle of the pack, with the Toronto Titans and the North York Rangers each represented with one former player.

The puck dropped on Tuesday with three games, as Sean Durzi (Mississauga Rebels) and the Utah Hockey Club made history with the franchise’s first win in a 5-2 final over Andreas Athanasiou and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Mitch Marner (Don Mills Flyers) and the Toronto Maple Leafs get things started on Wednesday night in Montreal.
