147 GTHL alumni featured in OHL Opening Week

On Thursday, October 7, the Ontario Hockey League will drop the puck on the much anticipated 2021-22 season. OHL Opening Week will feature a total of 147 Greater Toronto Hockey League alumni.

While the North Bay Battalian lead the way with 12 and the Niagara IceDogs not too far behind with 11, all OHL teams have at least four GTHL graduates, leaving GTHL alumni making up at least 16 per cent of every OHL roster.

Don Mills Flyers graduate and Kingston Frontenacs forward Shane Wright is in the spotlight as he skates towards the 2022 NHL Entry Draft this season. Wright will be looking to build on the 66-points registered in 59 games through the 2019-20 campaign.

Over in North Bay, another graduate of the Don Mills Flyers program has made headlines in the OHL this week, as Liam Arnsby was named captain of the Battalian. Arnsby and the Battalian will start the 2021-22 campaign on Thursday night against the Peterborough Petes.

Looking to the OHL’s Western Conference, Francesco Pinelli, former Toronto Red Wings captain, is poised to have an impressive season with the Kitchener Rangers following a 41-point rookie campaign in 2019-20 and 11 points in seven games while representing Canada at the 2021 IIHF Under-18 World Championship.

Thursday night features three games for OHL Opening Week, with seven more games slated for Friday, October 8.
