Easy and refreshing snacks to enjoy this offseason

The offseason months often mean rest, sunshine, summer sports, and ice cream! Outside of the ice cream treats, it’s important to mix in some healthy snacks for a young athlete, too. Athletes still need the simple sugars for energy, protein for muscle recovery, and lots of fluids to ensure they’re staying hydrated, replenishing from sweat loss.

Here are five easy and refreshing healthy snacks to enjoy this offseason:

  1. Fruit Popsicles

Blend up your favourite fruit, pour it into a popsicle mold, and freeze for a thirst-quenching snack to stay refreshed and hydrated on the go. Why make your own? Homemade is healthier and won’t have artificial food dyes and sweeteners that are often found in storebought popsicles. Plus, you can choose your favourite flavour with the fruit you have in the house.

  1. Apple Nachos with Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate

Cut an apple into thin slices, drizzle your favourite nut butter on top, and sprinkle some dark chocolate chips for a delicious healthy snack. It’s vegan, gluten free, and a snack that incorporates fruit, protein, and chocolate all in one – can you say best dessert ever?

  1. Frozen Yogurt Bark and Berries

Spread your yogurt mixture on a baking sheet. Top the mixture with berries and sprinkle your choice of nuts, if desired. Place the mixture in the freezer for two-to-three hours, cut up, and enjoy! Want to ensure you’re capitalizing on protein intake? Use Greek yogurt!

  1. Rainbow Veggie Pinwheels

Take a large tortilla, spread a layer of cream cheese or your favourite dip, then layer a rainbow of thinly sliced vegetables. Roll it up and cut into pinwheels for a colourful, fun snack! These are easy snacks for at home, on the go, or even a packable lunch for those summer camp days!

  1. Key Lime Pie Energy Bites

Who doesn’t love a slice of key lime pie? These easy energy bites are vegan, gluten free, and use just five ingredients for a healthy snack. With your key limes, mix dates (the stickiness holds them all together!), cashews, coconut (perfect pairing for your key lime), and maple syrup (optional add).

Enjoy your healthy snacking this summer!
