There’s nothing quite like cellying to your favourite tune after a hard fought victory, but when it comes to songs about the actual game, there’s no shortage of anthems to get you amped.


10. The Tragically Hip – Fireworks

You can’t have a list of songs about hockey without mentioning the Tragically Hip. Fireworks touches on the 1972 Summit Series and hints at frontman Gord Downie’s lifelong love for the Boston Bruins.

9. Uncle Gordie – The Planet Smashers

Ska and hockey have never really gone hand and hand until now. The catchy horn lines will have you lacing up your skates in no time.

8. He Looked A Lot Like Tiger Williams – The Hanson Brothers

Named after the trio from the 1982 film “Slap Shot” the Hanson Brothers reference the game in the majority of their songs. He Looked A Lot Like Tiger Williams pays tribute to the former NHL enforcer.

Sample Lyric: He looked a lot like Tiger Williams, he was brave and strong and true. But if you tried to cross him, he would put a hurt on you

7. Say I – Saukrates

Previously featured in a sportswear commercial, Say I is an homage to perseverance and mentions GTHL grad P.K. Subban

Sample Lyric: Young man keep skating ‘till the lights get dark, have Don Cherry saying that he like your art, and be the reason all the younger kids try your sport

6. I Want to Drive the Zamboni – The Zamboni’s

Be honest, you’ve always kind of wanted to. A ballad dedicated to one guys life long dreaming of driving the zamboni.

Sample Lyric: Since I was young it’s been my dream to drive that there zamboni machine. I’d get that ice just as slick as could be, and all the kids would look up to me.

5. The Ballad of Wendel Clark – The Rheostatics

A tribute to the former Toronto Maple Leafs captain.

Sample Lyric: Wendel was a man with a stick in his hands who learned how to play in Kelvington, S-A-S-K.

4.The Pursuit of Happiness – Gretzky Rocks

Know nothing about Wayne Gretzky? Doubtful. Just in case, the Pursuit of Happiness give listeners a brief history of the Great One in Gretzky Rocks.

3. Hit Somebody! – Warren Zevon

A story about a farm boy named Buddy, Hit Somebody! is a tribute to hockey goons everywhere.

2. Fifty Mission Cap – The Tragically Hip

Known word for word by most Canadians, Fifty Mission Cap tells the story of former Toronto Maple Leaf Bill Barilko.

Sample Lyric: The last goal he ever scored won the Leafs the cup. They didn’t win another until 1962, the year he was discovered.

Heard at every hockey game throughout North America (and possibly the world), is there really any game better than the good ol’ hockey game?

Sample Lyric: Oh take me where the hockey players face off down the rink, and the Stanley Cup, is all filled up, for the champs who win the drink!
