The Under-12 Streetsville Tigers turned a challenging time into a positive community effort.
During the 2022-23 season, a member of the team’s coaching staff was impacted by cancer. On the heels of the new hockey season, and with the coach now in the clear, the team decided to participate in the Terry Fox Run together.
“We decided as a team to show support for the treatment received and to honour a great Canadian hero,” John Levac, an assistant coach for the Tigers, shared.
The plan was to run 5km, however, most kids ended up clocking in a 10km effort. Additionally, the team raised $2,700 in support.
“Our team trained for the event, had a blast doing it, and we raised [money] for a great cause,” Levac said. “We had planned to run 5km, but most of our kids missed the well disguised turnaround and ran 10km!”
“[It was] great learning for our kids about charitable giving and an awesome way to get fit and ready for the season. I would urge other teams to participate next year!” Levac concluded.
