Never underestimate the strength of a three-year-old. That’s what the father of Don Mills Mustangs Minor Bantam A goaltender Zach Hughes learned the hard way.

“He put a hole in our basement drywall from a wrist shot,” explained Zach’s Dad Mike Hughes.

Too young for league play, Zach opted for playing pond hockey with friends and family before signing up for house league two years later. Now in his Minor Bantam season, Zach has helped his team earn a Kraft Cup Championship, all the while adding another accomplishment to his resume: an undefeated season.

“I’m supported by great teammates, we have a really good d-men and our forwards always backcheck,” said Zach, who played in 19 games this season – recording 17 wins and two ties.

As much as the personal accomplishment means to him, Zach is just as excited to be part of the team effort it took to win a Kraft Cup Championship.

“It’s awesome, last season we finished 4th and lost in the first round of the playoffs and this year, with a lot of hard work, we managed to beat the teams that we lost to last year,” said Zach. “The Kraft Cup was really special, plus one of the Mom’s made us Kraft Dinner to celebrate.”

Shouldn’t every undefeated season come with a side of KD?

DID YOU KNOW?

Only two teams managed to go undefeated this season. The Vaughan Rangers Atom A team finished on top of the Atom A West division after going 35-0-1. The Minor Bantam AA Ted Reeve Thunder also conquered their division with a 33-0-3 record.
