Scotiabank GTHL Playoffs Roundup: Feb. 9

With Kraft Cup champions being crowned and the Scotiabank GTHL Playoffs underway, the Roundup will provide weekly updates on series and take a look at what lies ahead for the rest of the 2015-16 GTHL season.

A number of divisions finish regular-season schedules and begin playoffs this week.

Atom AA West
Regular-season ends: Tuesday, Feb. 9
Playoffs begin: Thursday, Feb. 11

Peewee AA East

Minor Midget AAA – Round 1 | First to eight points
The Marlboros, Rebels and Red Wings have clinched berths in the 2016 OHL Cup by virtue of winning their first-round series. The winner of the Jr. Canadiens/Flyers series will also earn a guaranteed spot.

The Kings, Senators, Majors and loser of the remaining series will face-off in the first-ever GTHL Wild Card Play-in Series, with two more guarenteed spots on the line. This division will pause for the Youth Olympic Games until Saturday, Feb. 27.

Peewee AA West  – Round 1 | First to four points
A six-game winning streak to close the season helped carry the Mississauga Terriers (30-4-2, 62 points) to the Kraft Cup. With first place wrapped up, the Terriers now await their first opponent in the Scotiabank GTHL Playoffs. The top four clubs – the Terriers, Vaughan Panthers (29-6-1, 59 points), Humber Valley Sharks (28-6-2, 58 points) and Mississauga North Stars (27-6-3, 57 points) – earned first-round byes in the 17-team division and will play the winners of the following series:

Peewee AAA – Round 1 | First to eight points
The Don Mills Flyers clinched the Kraft Cup last night with a win in their regular-season finale. At 27-4-2 (56 points), the Flyers finished one point ahead of the Toronto Marlboros (25-3-5, 55 points) to claim the title.

The Flyers and Marlboros both begin their postseason Friday, but the Scotiabank GTHL Playoffs commence tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb. 10) in the other two opening-round series.
