End of an Era as GTHL closes 2014-15 season

The Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) closed its 104th season at the Annual General Meeting on Saturday, June 13 at the Richmond Hill Golf Club.

John Gardner concluded his 35-year run as volunteer President of the GTHL and stepped down to take on the role as Immediate Past President. Don West, who previously held the position as Second Vice President, was acclaimed as the new President and Chairman of the Board. Mr. West paid tribute to Mr. Gardner highlighting the tremendous impact he has had on hundreds of thousands of young hockey players over his 35 years as President. Mr. Gardner was presented with a ring and framed photo commemorating his years of service to the League.

Mr. Gardner announced the appointment of Michael Penman as an Honorary Life Member of the League. Mr. Penman had served as legal counsel to the League since 1979 and had served as Secretary on the Board since 1996. Mr. Penman recently retired from his law practice and has been acclaimed as First Vice President of the Ontario Hockey Federation, an office he officially takes on July 1.

The Board of Directors for the 2015-16 season were determined and will consist of five Officers – President Don West, First Vice President Ken Smith, Second Vice President Gordon McDonald, Third Vice President Geoff Shaw and Treasurer John Trimble. The eight Directors acclaimed to their positions are Bob Cranston, Chick Evans, Andrew Kidd, David Leathem, Mike Lewicki, Doug Thomson, Wally Turner and Phil Wolfenden.

Outgoing President Gardner presented the George Chamandy Memorial Trophy to Barry Harte, the President of the City of Vaughan Hockey Association. The award is presented to an individual who demonstrates supreme effort and a longstanding commitment to fostering and promoting minor hockey. This trophy is the highest award presented to any individual by the GTHL.

The League also recognized the Warren Park Hockey Association and the Toronto Red Wings, as both organizations celebrated their 60th anniversary this past season.

At the meeting, the League membership also considered and ratified several By-Law, Rule and Regulation Amendments. In addition, the League presented its Audited Financial Statements for the fiscal year end of April 30, 2015.

Reports from the President, Executive Director and the Strategic Planning Committee and Rules and Policy Committee also were presented.
