GTHL remembers Doug West

The Greater Toronto Hockey League and its community mourn the passing of Doug West, a pillar of the Faustina Hockey Club, who passed away at the age of 70 on March 20, 2025.

Doug’s dedication to Faustina spanned over 35 years, beginning as a member on November 15, 1989. His contributions to the club were immeasurable — coaching both House League and Select teams, serving as a long-time Board of Governors member, and leading as Club President during the 1997-1998 season. For over 30 years, he played a key role in running the club’s pre-season hockey school, providing a starting point for young players learning to skate. His efforts extended beyond the ice, as he spent over two decades helping to organize Faustina’s tournaments and community events.

Doug was always willing to lend a hand wherever needed: whether it was cleaning dressing rooms, restocking the club room, setting up for Trophy Day, or operating the spotlight on finals day.

Volunteering at Faustina runs deep in the West family. Doug’s father, Norm, joined Faustina in 1947, and his uncle Pete was involved dating back to the 1930s. The tradition continues today, as Doug’s daughter Samantha and her husband Brandon now help coach Faustina’s Under-7 Purple team, where his grandsons, Westley and Zachary, play.

Only two months ago, Doug played a vital role in organizing Faustina’s 90th anniversary open house, working tirelessly behind the scenes to make the celebration special. His presence and contributions were woven into every aspect of the club, making Faustina more than just a hockey program — rather, a true community, thanks significantly to his efforts.

As shared by the Faustina Hockey Club: “Doug’s legacy lives on in Faustina’s history, in the club room and dressing rooms, and most importantly, on the ice with the next generation of Wests.”

Doug’s obituary can be found here. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to the Faustina Hockey Club in his honour.

The GTHL extends its condolences to Doug’s family, friends, and all he impacted during this difficult time.
