Six GTHL teams took part in the Gloria Rints Memorial International Silver Stick Tournament in Whitby over the weekend, which meant a light schedule for regular-season hockey. Sunday’s semifinals saw the Don Mills Flyers defeat the Mississauga Rebels 3-1 and the Toronto Jr. Canadiens advance with a 1-0 overtime win over the Toronto Marlboros. The Flyers then won the championship on the strength of a 2-1 win in the final.

In the only three regular-season games over the weekend, the North York Rangers earned a 4-0 win versus the Markham Majors and a 2-2 tie against the Toronto Young Nationals while the Toronto Red Wings skated to a 5-0 victory over the Mississauga Senators.

The Vaughan Rangers and Vaughan Panthers continue to battle for the top spot in the West division following respective wins on the final weekend of November.

The Rangers maintained their perfect 20-0-0 record with a 7-0 win over the West Mall Lightning. The Panthers, meanwhile, won their sixth consecutive contest with a 3-2 decision over the Toronto Wolverines. At 18-3-1 (37 points), the Panthers have lost only to the Rangers this season and remain three points behind the club for first place.

In the only other weekend contest, the Toronto Eagles skated to a 6-1 win over the Humberview Huskies to move into a points-tie with the Humber Valley Sharks (11-7-1, 23 points). The Eagles hold a record of 11-9-1 and sit behind the Sharks in fourth place by virtue of having played two more games.

* First place in the East division still belongs to the Toronto Aeros (15-2-2, 32 points), despite a convincing victory by the second-place North York Knights (14-4-3, 31 points).

The Aeros narrowly skated to a 2-1 win over the Goulding Park Rangers on Saturday while the Knights eased to a 6-1 win over the same club on Sunday night at Victoria Village. The Knights now have won five straight contests, including a 3-2 win over the Aeros on Nov. 18.

The only other weekend contest in the East saw the Markham Islanders (12-9-0, 24 points) move into third place with a 5-0 shutout over the Hillcrest Canadiens.

* The Mississauga Braves look poised to prove how the west was won following a pair of convincing victories over the weekend. The Braves first picked up a 6-1 win over the Toronto Eagles before cruising past the Mississauga Terriers 9-1. With the wins, the Braves (16-3-1, 33 points) jumped into first place in the division, three points ahead of the Ice Warriors (13-2-4, 30 points).

The Humber Valley Sharks jumped into seventh place with a 2-1 win over the Vaughan Rangers while the Toronto Royals and Streetsville Tigers tied 4-4.
