TORONTO, ON – The 15th annual Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) Top Prospects Game fuelled by Gatorade took place on Wednesday, January 29 at Scotiabank Pond in front of over 1,100 fans. Team Red came out victorious against Team Blue with a convincing 7-3 win.
Team Red was coached by returnees Nik Antropov and Anthony Stewart, with Jamie Edwards (Don Mills Flyers), Justin Donati (Toronto Marlboros), and Angelo Staggolis (Don Mills Flyers) rounding out the bench staff. Team Blue featured Rane Carnegie and first-time celebrity coach Cody Hodgson, alongside Matthew Viola (Toronto Jr. Canadiens), Steve Mercer (Toronto Titans), and Raymond Andrew de Souza (Toronto Jr. Canadiens).
Special guests for this year’s ceremonial puck drop featured Adam Day, Director of Marketing for Gatorade Canada, Bernice Carnegie, and GTHL Board of Director Karl Subban.
The lone goal scored in the first period went to Team Red, with Evan Nicholson (Don Mills Flyers) giving his team an early 1-0 lead.
The middle frame saw Team Blue come out of the gates with three unanswered goals within the first two minutes of the period, starting with Matthew Perreault (Toronto Titans) just 19 seconds in. Sam Roberts (Toronto Jr. Canadiens) gave Team Blue its first lead of the night, scoring 20 seconds after Perreault. Tyler Lee (Don Mills Flyers) finished off a pretty tic-tac-toe passing play to give Team Blue a 3-1 lead.
Team Red, however, was able to calm their nerves and started mounting their comeback. Andrew Pacheco (North York Rangers) responded for Team Red just under a minute after Lee’s marker to cut the lead to 3-2. Brenner Lammens (Toronto Red Wings) tied the game at three-a-piece with just over seven minutes lremaining in the second. Team Red capped off the exciting period by re-taking the lead, courtesy of a powerplay goal from Lyndon Cabral (Don Mills Flyers) late in the period.
In the third period, Team Blue came out strong, determined to tie the game once again, but Cruz Reznik (Toronto Red Wings) shut the door during his period and a half of play for Team Red.. Aidan Witkowski (Toronto Marlboros) and Charlie Murata (Don Mills Flyers) added insurance markers for Team Red, with the final score at 7-3 for Team Red.
The Gatorade Player of the Game for Team Blue was Sam Roberts, who finished the game with two points (one goal and one assist).
The Gatorade Player of the Game for Team Red was Lyndon Cabral, who scored the game-winning goal and also added an assist.
