Coaching: Get Started

Becoming a minor hockey coach is an exciting way to support players and be a part of their journey, both as hockey players and as people. To get started, every coach, must complete a few important steps.

STEP 1

CREATE/LOG IN TO YOUR HOCKEY CANADA ACCOUNT

  • Go to the Hockey Canada Registry (HCR).
    (If you do not have a profile, create an account.)  
  • Make sure your profile information is correct and up to date. If you’re linked to a family account, select your own profile before checking qualifications or registrations.

STEP 2

CHECK YOUR QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certifications vary based on the level of coaching. 
  • Use your HCR profile to review what you’ve already completed and what’s still needed.
  • Certifications may include:
    • Respect in Sport
    • Gender Identity and Expression Training
    • Coach and/or Trainer Clinics

STEP 3

REGISTER FOR CLINICS OR COURSES

  • Sign up early to secure your spot in any required clinics.
  • Registration is done through your HCR profile.

STEP 4

COMPLETE A VULNERABLE SECTOR CHECK (VSC)

All bench staff must have a valid Vulnerable Sector Check completed. For more information, visit the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) website.

STEP 5

CHECK FOR CERTIFICATES AND DOCUMENTS IN HCR.

Review your HCR account to ensure all completed certifications and required documents are completed and recorded in your account.

STEP 6

GET APPROVED AND JOIN YOUR TEAM

Once all requirements are complete and approved, you’re officially ready to take your spot on the bench.
