Established in 2005, the Frank D. Smith U18 ‘A’ Scholarship Award was developed to recognize a U18 ‘A’ player who achieves a high standard of excellence academically and in hockey. The Award is a one-time post-secondary educational scholarship of $2,000 provided by the GTHL.
Frank D. Smith was the founder of the Toronto Hockey League (now the GTHL) in 1911. He remained Secretary of the League for 50 years. His vision allowed the League to develop rapidly, while his passion and focus remained on the children and the game.
Smith was known as a man “who put so much into the game without expecting to get anything out of it”. He started many programs that exist today in the GTHL, including the King Clancy tournament. Frank D. Smith was inducted into the builder’s category of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961.
Eligibility: Any registered U18 ‘A’ player in the 2025-26 season from the GTHL or Mississauga Hockey League can apply and/or be nominated.
