81 GTHL alumni featured on 2023-24 NHL opening night rosters

A total of 81 Greater Toronto Hockey League alumni are included on NHL Opening Night rosters as the puck drops on the 2023-24 season this week.

The New Jersey Devils and the Edmonton Oilers top the list with six players each, with the Arizona Coyotes next up with five, and the Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Toronto Maple Leafs right behind on the list with four former GTHL players on their respective rosters. Of the 32 NHL teams, 28 have at least one GTHL alumnus rostered, while 16 tams have three or more former players.

All 12 GTHL ‘AAA’ clubs are represented at the NHL-level. The Toronto Marlboros feature 22 alumni, with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens second in line with 10. The Don Mills Flyers have seven former players rostered, while the Toronto Red Wings, and Mississauga Rebels see six former players rostered each as the 2023-24 NHL season gets underway. The Mississauga Senators, Reps Hockey Club, Toronto Titans, and the Toronto Young Nationals all feature five. The Vaughan Kings have four, with the Markham Majors and North York Rangers represented with one former player each.

The hometown Toronto Maple Leafs and captain John Tavares began their season Wednesday night, grabbing a 6-5 shootout victory over Arber Xhekaj and the Montreal Canadiens.

This season also sees former Toronto Jr. Canadiens Ryan O’Reilly and Alex Pietrangelo, along with former Toronto Young National Jeff Skinner chasing the 1,000 game milestone.
