For Navinder Biln, officiating has always been about more than calling the game.
Born in England before moving to Canada as a young child, Biln’s first experience wearing the stripes came not on the ice, but on the soccer field. As a teenager, he began officiating soccer — a path he was introduced to by his father. The two even had the opportunity to officiate together from time to time, creating memories that would stay with Biln well beyond the field.

After studying at Western University, Biln later returned to England, where he worked and continued to build his professional career in tech. But after the passing of his father, Biln found himself reflecting on something bigger — his purpose, his connection to community, and the impact he wanted to have on young people through sport.
That sense of purpose brought him back to the game in a deeper way.
For nearly a decade, Biln has worked as a coach and skills development trainer, supporting young athletes as they grow their confidence, ability, and love for the game. A few years ago, he took another step in his hockey journey by becoming an official and enrolling in the Fast Track Development Program.
Since then, Biln has continued to approach officiating with the same mindset he brings to coaching: learn, grow, give back, and help create a positive environment for the next generation.
While he remains committed to improving and becoming the best official he can be, Biln’s heart remains in grassroots and youth hockey. For him, the goal is not simply to move up — it is to continue contributing where the game begins, where young players develop, and where meaningful impact can be made.
Through coaching, training, and officiating, Biln’s story is rooted in family, purpose, and community — a reminder that the people in the stripes play an important role in shaping the game far beyond the whistle.
