GTHL Continues Beyond the X’s and O’s Coaching Program

The Greater Toronto Hockey League is proud to officially launch the Beyond the X’s and O’s (BXO) Coaching Program, a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to support coaches in understanding their athletes, improving team culture, and maximizing their impact behind the bench.

Developed and delivered by Dr. Cassidy Preston, Founder of CEP Mindset, and veteran coach and leadership mentor Chris De Piero, the BXO Coaching Program goes beyond systems and drills to equip coaches with tools that build player focus, resilience, confidence, and teamwork.

Following a successful pilot program in the 2024-25 season which included the Toronto Marlboros, Humber Valley Hockey Association, and Ted Reeve Hockey Association, the program is now open to coaches across the GTHL.

“BXO is a tremendous program that all coaches should participate in. The content that both Cassidy and Chris provide is valuable information to assist any coach at any level with their individual development,” said Joe Birch, U14 Toronto Marlboros Head Coach.

The program includes:

  • Five online modules designed to address real-world coaching challenges.
  • Team assessments that provide anonymous feedback to help coaches identify strengths and opportunities for growth.
  • Live workshops with Dr. Preston and De Piero, offering practical strategies and personalized insights.

Participants will also earn three National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) points upon completion.

The program is free to GTHL coaches, with all costs covered by the League. Participation is limited to the first 40 coaches who register.

“Coaches play a pivotal role in shaping the hockey experience for young players,” said Scott Oakman, GTHL Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer. “The BXO Coaching Program provides meaningful support that empowers coaches to foster strong team environments while enhancing their own development.”
