The Greater Toronto Hockey League is aware of the January 26, 2026 letter circulated by counsel for the Markham Majors and Markham Islanders, which also states it represents the views of the Vaughan Rangers (City of Vaughan Hockey Association) and Vaughan Panthers, in response to recent media coverage.
First and foremost, the GTHL’s responsibility is to ensure that players and families are treated fairly and that funds paid by participants are used appropriately, transparently, and for the benefit of the communities they belong to. The Review Committee believes that certain recently discovered, undisclosed ice overcharges by Markham Islanders, Markham Majors, Vaughan Rangers, and Vaughan Panthers appear to be inconsistent with these principles. As game-ice costs are funded by the GTHL through the payment of the Player Registration fees (PRF) from families across the League for all competitive teams (A, AA, AAA), the GTHL is taking this matter very seriously.
The GTHL Review Committee appointed by the Board remains committed to resolving this matter constructively — either directly with the organizations involved or through the established hockey dispute resolution process. Litigation is not the GTHL’s preferred option, however, to preserve the League’s legal rights while those resolution efforts continue, the GTHL has filed a Statement of Claim broadly setting out its concerns. The claim has not been served, and the GTHL Board has up to six months to determine whether it will be served.
As this matter is ongoing, the GTHL will not litigate it through the media. The filed claim speaks for itself, and the League remains focused on a timely and fair resolution.
