The Under-11 ‘AA’ West Mall Lightning put in hustle off the ice to make a difference. On Sunday, December 7, the team hosted their fourth annual 5km Charity Run around Centennial Arena, bringing together players, coaches, and family members for a day built around teamwork, effort, and giving back.
As in previous years, the event wasn’t just about completing the run. Each player was also tasked with collecting non-perishable food items for the local food bank, along with donations in support of Food Banks Canada. Skates were swapped for running shoes, but the spirit of the game — supporting one another and working toward a common goal — was front and centre.
This year’s results included:
- 100 non-perishable food items donated and delivered to the local food bank in Etobicoke, and
- $4,481.25 raised for Food Banks Canada, thanks to generous contributions from families, friends, and supporters — far surpassing the team’s original goal of $1,600.
“We are incredibly proud of the team’s continued commitment to making a positive impact, and it’s inspiring to see the U11 ‘AA’ group and their families go above and beyond again this year,” shared team representative, Deanna Lorusso.
For the West Mall Lightning, the annual charity run has become an important team tradition and a reminder of what youth hockey can represent. Hockey gives so much to their families — community, personal growth, and unforgettable experiences — and the group is committed to giving back to the community that supports them.
