Vaughan Kings Score Big for Local Families with Annual Food Drive

The Vaughan Kings are proving that the biggest wins don’t always happen on the ice.

Now in its eighth year, the club’s annual Christmas food drive is once again supporting families in need throughout Vaughan and the Greater Toronto Area. From early November until mid-December, collection bins are set up in front of the Vaughan Kings team office at Westwood Arena, inviting players and families from every age group to contribute.

Each player is encouraged to donate at least two non-perishable food items — but the players have regularly been going above and beyond. This season, the Under-13 team filled an entire bin on their own, contributing more than 120 items — over six hundred dollars’ worth of food — to the Vaughan Food Bank. For the players, it’s a simple act of kindness they understand and take pride in.

Across the organization, the Vaughan Kings typically fill six large bins during the holiday season. In total, those donations amount to hundreds of food items in support, helping ensure local families have access to essential supplies during what could be a challenging time of year. The entire organization is taking part in this year’s Vaughan Food Bank Christmas drive, with strong leadership from groups like the U13 and U10 teams, among others.

All donations are delivered to the Vaughan Food Bank, which distributes the items to residents in need and several community partners, including Cross Links Community Services, Vitanova Foundation, Caritas, Street Outreach, 360 Kids, and Elpsworth Centre.

Through their annual food drive, the Kings are demonstrating what it means to be part of a community-minded hockey organization — where developing good people matters just as much as developing good players.
