TORONTO, ON — The Greater Toronto Hockey League is proud to congratulate Mark Ngo of the Under-14 A Applewood Coyotes, the recipient of the 2026 John R. Gardner Special Recognition Award.
Established in 2001 by GTHL President John Gardner, the John R. Gardner Special Recognition Award was developed to recognize players who have displayed inspirational courage in overcoming adversity while maintaining a dedication and commitment to competing in hockey.
The award is presented by the GTHL to players from Competitive, Select, or House League hockey who have experienced a significant event in their lives, overcome adversity, and continued playing the game.
Ngo’s journey has inspired his teammates, coaches, family, organization, and the broader hockey community. In September, Ngo was diagnosed with a sudden brain tumour in the middle of his brain, requiring an emergency 12-hour surgery. Through recovery, perseverance, and determination, Ngo worked his way back to the team and eventually returned to the ice.
His impact extended well beyond his own recovery. Ngo also fundraised close to $4,000 for SickKids, further demonstrating his strength, generosity, and commitment to helping others.
After returning to the ice in December for a fun skate at the team’s Christmas party, Ngo continued practicing throughout the new year. He later returned to game action, playing in his first two games back with the U14 A Applewood Coyotes — and scoring in his second game back.
His return was described by his coach as one of the most special moments of his 24-year coaching career.
Ngo was recognized during the 2026 GTHL Awards Gala presented by Nothers The Award Store on June 4 at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Greg Rapier, President of the Mississauga Hockey League, presented the award to Ngo on stage. As part of this year’s GTHL Awards Gala, Esso also provided each recipient with a $250 gas card to help further fuel their journeys.
“I am so grateful and honoured to be receiving this award,” Ngo shared in his acceptance speech. “I’d like to thank the GTHL for selecting me for this recognition.”
For Ngo, receiving the award reflects the values that helped him through his recovery.
“Receiving this award means a lot because it represents hard work, determination, and a strong mindset,” Ngo said. “Hockey has played a big part in my recovery.”
Ngo thanked his family and friends for their love, support, care, and encouragement. He also dedicated the award to his coaches and teammates with the U14 A Applewood Coyotes.
“I’d like to dedicate this award to my coaches — Coach Chris, Coach Ken, Coach George, Coach Johnny, and Coach Marco — and my teammates from the U14 A Applewood Coyotes for believing in me, helping me, and for allowing me to be part of this special team,” Ngo said.
As he stood on stage, Ngo reflected on what it meant to return to the game he loves.
“I’m blessed to stand here and be able to play the sport that I love again,” Ngo said. “I hope my story encourages others to keep going and stay strong when facing tough challenges.”

The GTHL congratulates Mark Ngo on a well-deserved honour.
