GTHL Reminds Spectators of Green Armband Policy for 2026-27 Season

A green armband on the ice carries an important message: this official is new to the game. Give them the respect, patience, and support they deserve.

With the 2026-27 season is in full swing, the Greater Toronto Hockey League is reminding players, parents, coaches, and spectators of its Green Armband Policy and the important role everyone plays in creating a positive environment in our rinks.

First introduced in January 2024, the Green Armband Policy identifies first-year officials who are beginning their officiating journeys.

The policy applies across recreational hockey, including House League and Select, as well as competitive ‘A,’ ‘AA,’ and ‘AAA’ hockey.

What Does a Green Armband Mean?

If you see an official wearing a green armband on their left arm, between their elbow and shoulder, it means they are in their first year of officiating.

Many of these officials are young people, often under the age of 18, who are learning, developing their skills, and gaining valuable experience on the ice.

Just like the players they are officiating, they are going to learn with every game. Mistakes will also happen along the way — that’s part of development, just like it is for your player on the ice.

The green armband is a reminder to be patient, be supportive, and most importantly, be respectful.

Respect Isn’t Optional

Hockey is a passionate game. But passion should never come at the expense of the people who make the game possible.

The GTHL reminds all spectators, parents, players, and Team Officials that verbal abuse, intimidation, harassment, and other forms of maltreatment directed toward officials — or anyone at the rink — are unacceptable.

That includes yelling at officials from the stands, directing personal comments toward them, or placing unnecessary pressure on individuals who are doing their best to learn and contribute to the game.

Note, while the green armband identifies a first-year official, the expectation of respect applies to every official, at every level, in every game.

Let’s Keep Officials in the Game

Every experienced official was once a beginner.

The GTHL’s Green Armband Policy is about more than identifying new officials. It’s about giving them the opportunity to build confidence, develop their abilities, and enjoy being part of hockey.

Officiating is an essential part of our game, and developing the next generation of officials is a responsibility shared by the entire hockey community.

As the 2026-27 season continues, the GTHL asks everyone attending games to remember one simple message: Respect Refs — without them, there is no game.
