TORONTO, ON — The Greater Toronto Hockey League is proud to announce John Bell, President of the George Bell Hockey Association, as the recipient of the 2025 George Chamandy Memorial Trophy. The award was formally presented at the GTHL’s Annual Meeting of Members on July 14.
Established in 1953, the George Chamandy Memorial Trophy is the League’s most prestigious honour, awarded to an individual (non-GTHL Executive) who has shown a longstanding and exceptional commitment to the growth and promotion of minor hockey in Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, and Markham. Named in memory of George Chamandy — an early supporter of the Toronto Hockey League (now the GTHL) — this award recognizes supreme effort, selfless service, and a deep-rooted passion for the game.
This year’s recipient, John Bell, exemplifies those values and more.
“It is a privilege to announce the 2025 Chamandy Award. This year, it goes to John Bell, President of the George Bell Hockey Association,” said Don West, GTHL President and Chair of the Board. “John does so much for the association, and he does it quietly, and collegially. He’s a fixture at the arena, and has been involved in the hockey association for over 24 years.”
Bell began his journey in the George Bell Hockey Association as a coach and later took on greater responsibility, becoming general manager before stepping into the role of president. His influence spans every level of hockey — from house league and select to competitive programming through the GTHL.
He has also played an instrumental role in supporting fellow hockey organizations, and was a key contributor in the creation of the west-end CDP loop, helping expand access and opportunity for young players in the area.
Under his leadership, George Bell Hockey Association has remained deeply committed to its mission:
“We aim to make hockey welcoming and accessible to all, regardless of ability, culture, or background, or economic circumstances. To create lifelong engagement in sport, and the community.”
“John is the embodiment of that promise,” added West.
The GTHL congratulates John Bell on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his enduring dedication to the hockey community.
