Adam Baldizon Named 2026 Frank D. Smith U18 A Scholarship Award Recipient

TORONTO, ON — The Greater Toronto Hockey League is proud to congratulate Adam Baldizon, the recipient of the 2026 Frank D. Smith Under-18 A Scholarship Award. The award is a one-time $2,000 post-secondary scholarship provided by the GTHL recognizing a U18 ‘A’ player who excels both academically and in hockey.

Established in 2005 and named in honour of Frank D. Smith, founder of the Toronto Hockey League — now the GTHL — the award celebrates academic achievement, commitment to hockey, and community involvement. Smith founded the League in 1911 and remained Secretary for 50 years. His vision helped the League develop rapidly, while his passion and focus remained on the children and the game.

Smith was known as a man “who put so much into the game without expecting to get anything out of it.” He started many programs that continue to exist in the GTHL today, including the King Clancy tournament. In 1961, Smith was inducted into the builder’s category of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Baldizon, a U18 A Toronto Eagles player, has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to excellence in the classroom, on the ice, and in the community. As an Ontario Scholar candidate at Humberside Collegiate Institute, Baldizon has maintained a 97 per cent academic average while excelling in advanced mathematics, chemistry, physics, and media studies.

His academic strengths have helped fuel his goal of pursuing mechanical engineering, with a focus on precision, logic, creativity, and complex problem-solving. Baldizon has balanced his academic achievements with the significant time commitments of playing U18 A hockey with the Toronto Eagles, while also competing as a multi-sport varsity athlete. His recent advancement to the DECA Provincial Finals further reflects his ability to apply academic rigour, strategic thinking, and leadership in a competitive environment.

Beyond hockey, Baldizon has competed in rugby and lacrosse, while also developing creative and technical interests as a self-taught guitarist and through STEM and design projects. He has also given back to the hockey community as a mentor for younger players, assisting with skills clinics and team practices, serving as a Level 2 certified ice hockey referee, and working as an on-ice instructor with the Canadian Hockey Academy during the summer.

Baldizon’s leadership also extends beyond the rink. As a Breakaway Tours School Representative, he helped organize and promote a February 2025 school trip to Montreal involving more than 100 students, acting as a liaison between students and organizers while providing leadership, communication, and coordination support.

Baldizon plans to attend a leading Canadian university, such as Queen’s University, the University of Western Ontario, or McMaster University, to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering with a specialization in Mechanical Engineering. Long term, he hopes to contribute to fields such as renewable energy and sustainable technologies by developing practical solutions with lasting impact.

Baldizon was recognized during the 2026 GTHL Awards Gala presented by Nothers The Award Store on June 4 at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Jim Nothers, owner of Nothers The Award Store, presented the award on stage. While Baldizon was unable to attend the ceremony due to competing at OFSAA for lacrosse, he shared his appreciation through a video message, with his parents accepting the honour on his behalf.

As part of this year’s GTHL Awards Gala, Esso also provided each recipient with a $250 gas card to help further fuel their journeys.

“I’m truly honoured to be this year’s recipient of the Frank D. Smith U18 A Scholarship Award,” Baldizon said. “Playing hockey has shown me that hard work, dedication, and the care and support of others can make a real difference in many areas of life. To me, this award is a reflection of that. I’d like to thank my family, coaches, teammates, and everyone who has supported me and encouraged me along the way. I’m especially grateful for the many years I spent with the 2008 A Toronto Eagles and for all the opportunities and experiences that came with it. Thank you for this great honour.”

Baldizon’s parents accepted the award on his behalf, with his father, Jose, sharing his pride in his son’s accomplishments and commitment.

“I don’t have anything prepared,” Jose said with a laugh. “It’s funny because we are receiving this award on behalf of my son, but I know you can tell how proud we are of him. He’s been a boy who’s been a good student all his life and he’s always been committed — until his grade 12 year, he never missed a game or practice. He only missed in grade 12 due to some exams and needing some more study time, that’s the kind of kid he is. He couldn’t make it due to the OFSAA championships, but thanks to the Toronto Eagles, Ernie, the team he was a part of — thanks to everybody.”

The GTHL congratulates Adam Baldizon on a well-deserved honour.
