Around the G: April 2023 Preview

The calendar flipping to April means another hockey season is wrapping up – but there is still lots to look forward to this month! Stay up to speed with all of April’s happenings in the latest Around the G. 

  • 2023 OHL Cup Championship Game (April 3)

The OHL Cup Championship Final took place on April 3 at Mattamy Athletic Centre in downtown Toronto. The game featured the Toronto Jr. Canadiens and the Vaughan Kings going head-to-head. The Jr. Canadiens came away with the 3-0 victory, completing the 2023 tournament undefeated with a 7-0 record.  

Jr. Canadiens’ captain Jake O’Brien was named the 2023 OHL Cup tournament MVP, setting a new Jr. Canadiens OHL Cup scoring record with 17 points (seven goals and 10 assists) in seven games. O’Brien also led all players with a plus/minus rating of a plus-13.  

O’Brien was also named to the 2023 OHL Cup Gatorade All-Star Team, along with teammates Luka Graziano and Alexander Armellin. Waterloo Wolves’ captain Brady Martin, and Vaughan Kings Carter Kostuch and Adrian Manzo rounded out the All-Star roster.

  • GTHL Playoffs (April) 

The 2022-2023 GTHL Playoffs come to a close in the month of April. A big congratulations to the teams that will be crowned GTHL Playoff Champions throughout the month, as well as all teams for their hard work throughout post-season competition!  

  • GTHL A Championships (April) 

The 2022-2023 GTHL ‘A’ Championship will be taking place the weekend of April 22-23. The top ‘A’ team from the GTHL and MHL will compete in a one-game playoff to determine the GTHL ‘A’ champion. At the Under-13 ‘A’ level, the teams will play a best-of-three series to determine who represents the GTHL at the OHF’s later this month.   

  • 2023 U14 OHL Cup (April 14-16) 

The Under-14 OHL Cup returns to Oakville for the 2022-2023 season. This event is comprised of the top U14 ‘AAA’ teams from across the province and will feature three teams from the GTHL.

  • 50th Annual Shamrock Tournament (April 7-9) 

West Hill Minor Hockey Association is hosting their 50th Annual Shamrock Tournament the weekend of April 7-9. This tournament is for Under-7 to Under-21 Select teams looking to wrap up their 2022-2023 season.

  • MHL Challenge (April 13-16) 

The Mississauga Hockey League has brought back the MHL Challenge Tournament for the 2022-2023 season. This tournament is for Under-11 to Under-15 Select teams.

  • 2022-2023 OHF Championships (April) 

The OHF Championships are a three-day event that produces champions at the Under-13, U15, and U18 ‘A’ and ‘AA’ divisions. The OHF Championships for these divisions will take place on the weekend of April 21 to April 23, 2023.  

The All-Ontario U13 and U15 ‘AAA’ Championships take place on the weekend of April 12 to April 16, 2023.  

The Central Region U18 ‘AAA’ Championship will take place on the week of April 3 to April 9, 2023.  

Five teams participate at each of the OHF Championships (the OHF Minor Hockey Member Partner Championship teams within the age category plus the host team).  

  • GTHL Pathway Skill Development Sessions (April) 

The GTHL will be hosting Pathway Skill Development Sessions for Under-10 to U15 players and goaltenders wishing to participate in upcoming tryouts. A player’s first experience of the new hockey season should not be a formal tryout. The skill sessions are intended to give players the opportunity to get back on the ice and practice skills in a fun and friendly environment before being evaluated.

  • 2023-2024 GTHL ‘AAA’ Tryouts (April 24-30) 

Competitive ‘AAA’ tryouts for the 2023-2024 season begin on Monday, April 24. The ‘AAA’ tryouts run for one week and will conclude on Sunday, April 30.
