GTHL Community Mourns Loss of David Branch

The Greater Toronto Hockey League is deeply saddened by the passing of David Branch, who passed away January 4 at the age of 77.

Dave’s impact on the game of hockey is immeasurable, but within the GTHL, he will be remembered first and foremost as a genuine friend of minor hockey and a steadfast supporter of player development and experience at the grassroots level. Over a remarkable 45-year tenure as Ontario Hockey League Commissioner (1979–2024), Dave helped shape the modern junior hockey landscape with a consistent focus on opportunity, education, and the overall experience of young athletes.

For the GTHL community, one of Dave’s most enduring legacies is his role — alongside longtime GTHL President John Gardner — in helping set the foundation for what became the OHL Cup showcase as it is known today. When minor hockey age classifications changed, Dave worked with Mr. Gardner to ensure the province’s top players would still have an elite platform to compete, be seen, and take the next step in their hockey journey. That belief — protecting pathways and putting players first — was at the heart of Dave’s relationship with minor hockey across Ontario.

“David Branch never lost sight of what matters most in our sport — the players. He believed the game should be built around their experience, their development, and the opportunities hockey can create for life beyond the rink,” shared Scott Oakman, GTHL Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer. “The GTHL always felt Dave’s support in growing the game the right way, and we’re grateful for his friendship, his leadership, and the time he invested in minor hockey. His impact will be felt for generations.”

On behalf of the Greater Toronto Hockey League, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Dave’s family, friends, and everyone across the hockey community who had the privilege of learning from and working alongside him.
