TORONTO, ON — The Greater Toronto Hockey League is proud to congratulate Hank Tang of the Under-18 Toronto Young Nationals, the recipient of the 2026 George F. Dufton U18 AAA Scholarship Award. The award is a one-time $2,000 post-secondary scholarship provided by the Don Mills Flyers Hockey Club, recognizing a U18 AAA player who achieves a high standard of excellence academically and in hockey.
The scholarship was established in 1993 in honour of George F. Dufton, four years after his passing at age 77. Dufton was an outstanding student and athlete in his youth and earned a university scholarship, but his family did not have the additional funds for him to attend. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Dufton worked in a tannery and never had the opportunity to attend university.
Dufton later went on to found the Don Mills Flyers in 1968, leaving a lasting legacy in minor hockey.
Tang, who has been involved in GTHL hockey for four years at the AAA level, is currently a student at St. Augustine Catholic High School. He is also part of the school’s STREAM Program, a selective academic pathway focused on advanced STEM learning, engineering design, and hands-on project work.
Admission to the STREAM Program requires a competitive application process, with students completing a more rigorous academic pathway that includes project-based learning and collaborative engineering challenges beyond the standard curriculum. Throughout high school, Tang has maintained marks in the high 90s while balancing the demands of competitive hockey.
Through STREAM, Tang has developed skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and time management — qualities that have supported his growth as both a student and an athlete. Beyond hockey, Tang has a strong interest in engineering, design, and hands-on building projects.
Tang hopes to attend the University of Toronto to pursue Engineering Science, specifically through the TrackOne pathway. The program is known for its rigorous academic environment and emphasis on problem-solving, innovation, and advanced engineering concepts. Tang is interested in the pathway because it allows students to build a strong foundation across multiple engineering disciplines before specializing.
Tang was recognized during the 2026 GTHL Awards Gala presented by Nothers The Award Store on June 4 at the Hockey Hall of Fame. GTHL Board of Director Phil Wolfenden presented the award on stage. As part of this year’s GTHL Awards Gala, Esso also provided each recipient with a $250 gas card to help further fuel their journeys.
“I’m truly honoured to receive the George F. Dufton Scholarship Award this year,” Tang shared in his acceptance speech. “To be recognized for excellence both academically and athletically means a great deal to me.”
Tang reflected on the role hockey and education have played in shaping who he is, and the way both have helped him grow.
“Hockey and education have played a major role in shaping who I am and I’m proud to be a part of a community that values success in both areas,” Tang said.
For Tang, the lessons learned through hockey have extended well beyond the rink.
“One of the greatest gifts that hockey gives me is the opportunity to grow as a person,” Tang said. “Throughout my years on the ice, I’ve learned the importance of discipline, consistency, and perseverance. Whether it be early morning practices or cramming assignments after late night games, hockey has taught me how to manage my time, push through these challenges, and learn from setbacks.”
Tang also expressed his gratitude to the GTHL, the Don Mills Flyers organization, and everyone involved in making the scholarship possible. He gave special thanks to his family for their support throughout his journey.
“Thank you for every early morning, every late night drive, every sacrifice, and every word of encouragement,” Tang said, adding special thanks to his mom. “Being a hockey mom is never easy, and your support means everything to me. I’m incredibly grateful to have you on my journey.”
Tang said the award is especially meaningful because it recognizes two parts of his life that have always gone hand in hand: hockey and education.
“The values I’ve learned through hockey have always helped me succeed in the classroom, while the commitment and work ethic I have developed through academics have carried over onto the ice,” Tang said. “Both have challenged me to grow, learn, and strive for excellence, which makes this recognition truly special.”

The GTHL congratulates Hank Tang on a well-deserved honour.
