Off the Boards: Rob Knesaurek’s Journey from GTHL Rinks to the NHL

From growing up in Flemingdon Park to helping grow the game around the world, GTHL alumnus Rob Knesaurek has come full circle in hockey.

The Greater Toronto Hockey League continues its Off the Boards alumni series with Rob Knesaurek, Senior Vice President of Industry Growth and Community at the National Hockey League, whose journey through hockey has taken him from Toronto’s local rinks to opportunities across the globe.

Growing up in Toronto’s Flemingdon Park neighbourhood, Knesaurek first stepped onto the ice at nine or 10 years old. With parents who had immigrated to Canada and knew little about hockey, the sport quickly became more than just an activity. It offered an opportunity for his entire family to build connections and find a sense of community in a city they were still getting to know.

Knesaurek began his minor hockey career with Don Mills before moving to Dorset Park and eventually progressing through the GTHL with the Toronto Young Nationals and Toronto Marlboros.

His hockey journey continued in the Ontario Hockey League, where he played for the Oshawa Generals and Sudbury Wolves, before attending the University of New Brunswick to pursue his post-secondary education while playing varsity hockey.

As his university hockey career came to a close, Knesaurek began shifting his focus toward life beyond the ice.

He started a career in health sciences, working his way through the industry before an opportunity took him overseas to Australia. Although his playing days were behind him, hockey remained part of his story.

While living in Australia, Knesaurek found his way back to the game when he was given the opportunity to coach Australia’s national hockey team at the World Championships.

Upon returning to Canada, he continued building his connection to the sport, launching a hockey training and development business that worked with players at various levels. That experience eventually opened the door to the NHL, where he has spent the past decade helping create opportunities for others to experience the game.

Today, Knesaurek’s work focuses on growing hockey, developing opportunities for participation, and connecting communities through the sport — bringing his journey back to where it all began.

For Knesaurek, hockey has been a constant throughout a career that has crossed industries, countries, and different roles within the game. What began as a way for a young player and his family to find community in Toronto has grown into a career dedicated to helping others discover those same connections.

His story is another reminder that the impact of minor hockey extends well beyond the final buzzer. The experiences, relationships, and opportunities created through the game can continue to shape lives long after players leave the rink.
