The 2026-27 National Hockey League season gets underway Tuesday, September 29, with 80 Greater Toronto Hockey League alumni featured on season-opening rosters across the NHL.
GTHL alumni are represented on 31 of the NHL’s 32 teams, led by the New Jersey Devils with eight. The Dallas Stars follow with five, while the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks, Seattle Kraken, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Washington Capitals each feature four former GTHL players.
The group spans generations of GTHL talent — from established NHL stars and Stanley Cup champions to a growing group of young alumni continuing to make their mark at hockey’s highest level.
Among the younger names is Anaheim Ducks forward Beckett Sennecke, a Toronto Marlboros graduate selected third overall in the 2024 NHL Draft.
The New Jersey Devils boast the largest GTHL contingent with eight alumni: Connor Brown, Jack Hughes, Amadeus Lombardi, Evan Rodrigues, Declan Chisholm, Dougie Hamilton, Luke Hughes, and Nico Daws. Four — Brown, Jack Hughes, Rodrigues, and Luke Hughes — spent time with the Toronto Marlboros.
Across the League, the list includes some of hockey’s most recognizable names, including Connor McDavid, Quinn Hughes, Mitch Marner, John Tavares, Sam Bennett, Jason Robertson, Jordan Binnington, Ryan O’Reilly, and Tom Wilson, alongside an emerging generation that includes Sennecke, Adam Fantilli, Michael Misa, Porter Martone, Zayne Parekh, Shane Wright, and Cole Perfetti.
GTHL connections highlight opening week
There will be plenty of GTHL connections on display from the moment the puck drops.
The NHL season opens September 29 with the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes raising their championship banner before hosting the Florida Panthers. The matchup puts GTHL alumni Jackson Blake and Sam Bennett on opposite sides of the season’s first game.
Later that evening, the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Montreal Canadiens in an Original Six matchup at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto’s GTHL contingent includes Nick Paul, John Tavares, Darren Raddysh, and Chris Tanev, while Montreal features former Mississauga Rebels forward Jake Evans and Mississauga Senators graduate Arber Xhekaj.
Opening night concludes in Canada with Jamie Oleksiak and the Vancouver Canucks visiting Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers.
In Las Vegas, former Don Mills Flyers forward Mitch Marner and the Golden Knights host a Chicago Blackhawks team featuring GTHL alumni Andrew Mangiapane and Ethan Del Mastro.
The connections continue Wednesday, September 30 when the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Philadelphia Flyers. Former Toronto Red Wings forward Nick Robertson could line up opposite a Philadelphia group featuring Porter Martone, Owen Tippett, and Jamie Drysdale, with Denver Barkey also among the Flyers’ GTHL alumni.
October 1 brings another slate of GTHL connections.
In Nashville, former Toronto Marlboros defenceman Quinn Hughes and the Minnesota Wild begin their season against former Toronto Jr. Canadiens forward Ryan O’Reilly and the Predators.
The New Jersey Devils also begin their season that night against Philadelphia, creating one of opening week’s most GTHL-heavy matchups, with New Jersey’s eight alumni and Philadelphia’s four combining for 12 former GTHL players.
Elsewhere, Calgary’s four-player GTHL contingent includes Brennan Othmann, Ryan Strome, Kevin Bahl, and Zayne Parekh, while Seattle features Mason Marchment, Curtis Douglas, Jake O’Brien, and Shane Wright — giving the two clubs eight GTHL alumni combined.
From longtime NHL veterans to some of the GTHL’s most recent graduates, the 2026-27 opening rosters once again showcase the League’s connection to the highest level of the game.
