EYHA celebrates 80th Anniversary, awards 70th Little Stanley Cup

The East York Hockey Association (EYHA) celebrated its 80th anniversary, and the 70th anniversary of the Little Stanley Cup, with a ceremony on March 29 at East York Memorial arena. The ceremony was an opportunity for the East York minor hockey community to come together and celebrate the legacy that the EYHA has built over eight decades in the sport.

“The atmosphere during the anniversary celebration was electric and filled with excitement,” said EYHA President Connie Mitchell.  “There was a palpable sense of pride and nostalgia as everyone came together to celebrate not just the milestone, but the rich history and legacy of the event.”

The organization, founded in 1945, has been awarding the Little Stanley Cup to its Under-13 division champions since the 1954-55 season, when it was granted special permission from then NHL President Clarence Campbell to use a replica of the iconic trophy. It is the only minor hockey organization with such a privilege.

From Mitchell’s perspective, it’s a privilege that inspires young athletes to dream big – allowing their hard work and dedication to be recognized.

EYHA - Little Stanley Cup - 2025“It is a tremendous honour,” said Mitchell. “It’s not just about the physical trophy; it symbolizes the connection between grassroots hockey and the professional level. For our organization, it elevates the experience for our players and the community, giving them a sense of achievement that feels bigger and more meaningful.””

While providing an opportunity for celebration and excitement, the festivities also served as a reminder of the importance of keeping historic minor hockey organizations and communities like the EYHA strong.

“By maintaining the strength of these organizations,” said Mitchell. “We ensure that the traditions and values of hockey are passed down through generations, giving future players the same opportunities and experiences. These organizations are not just about the sport itself, but about building stronger, more connected communities.”
